Free Football Baby Blanket/Tapestry Crochet Pattern

Hey y’all!

My nephew is about to be born, and I wanted to make a baby blanket for him. His whole family is obsessed with football, so a football baby blanket it was lol. I couldn’t find any patterns I liked, so I made my own! It can also be used as a big football tapestry if you wanted.

This free crochet pattern is easy to make as long as you know how to do color changes. I’d recommend the floating yarn technique that I’m going to discuss down below so that you don’t have to weave in a million ends.

If you would like to purchase the downloadable and printable PDF version of this pattern, you can find it on my Etsy or on Ravelry.

How to Make a Football Baby Blanket / Tapestry

Yarn

I used weight 4 acrylic yarn for this tapestry. But other yarn will work. I used green, white, and brown yarn for this pattern.

~546 yards of paddy green

~91 yards of brown

~200 yards of white

Stitches Used (US Terminology)

Slip Knot: tutorial by SarahMaker

  1. Create a slip knot on your crochet hook.

  2. Yarn over and pull through the slip knot loop, creating a new loop on your hook. This is the first chain stitch.

  3. Repeat these steps to create additional chain stitches: Yarn over, then draw the yarn over through the last loop on your hook to form a new chain stitch.
  1. Insert Hook: Insert the crochet hook into the stitch.

  2. Yarn Over (YO): Yarn over by bringing the yarn over the hook from the back to the front. The yarn should be positioned above the hook.

  3. Pull Through: Pull the yarn through the stitch. You should now have two loops on the hook.

  4. Yarn Over and Pull Through Both Loops: Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook. This completes one single crochet stitch.

  5. Repeat: To continue making single crochet stitches, insert the hook into the next chain, yarn over and pull through, then yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

  6. End of Row: When you reach the end of the row, you’ll typically work a turning chain (usually one chain for a single crochet) before you start the next row. This turning chain helps create the proper height for the next row of stitches.

When finishing an amigurumi piece, you’ll need to fasten off to secure the last stitch.

Cut the working yarn, leaving a tail, and pull the tail through the last loop on the hook, tightening it to secure the stitch.

Here’s a helpful video tutorial.

Football Baby Blanket / Tapestry Crochet Pattern/Tutorial

Skill Level: Intermediate Beginner

Materials and Tools

  • Weight 4 yarn in green, white, and brown
  • 5.0 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Markers
  • (optional) wooden dowel to hang
  • (optional) blocking board to block your work

How to Crochet a Tapestry from a Grid

The written out row-by-row steps as well as the pixel grid are available as an ad-free PDF if you purchase this pattern on my Etsy. But I’m going to provide the written out steps and instructions on how to crochet this tapestry in this post.

Please come to this post to read the pattern as it supports me and my free patterns that I release.

Notes:

When crocheting a tapestry, the base chain doesn’t count as the first row of pixels. The first row of pixels is the first SC across the base chain.

A tapestry is started in the bottom right corner and that row will be read from right to left. The next row will be read from left to right. Then right to left again. And continue in that pattern. I included arrows on the grid to help make it easier.

Be sure to chain one and turn at the end of each round.

This grid is 98×114 pixels, so you will do 114 rounds of 98 single crochets across. The finished size is ~30″x35″.

How to change Colors:

On the stitch before the color change, after you make two loops but before finishing the SC, hook the new color on and pull it through the two loops to finish the SC.

Then make a SC in the new color and your color change is complete.

How to do the Floating Yarn Technique

First, you’re going to do a color change, but instead of cutting the old color yarn, you’re just going to leave it floating on the backside of your work.

Then, when you want to switch back to your original color, just bring it to your working stitch and do a color change. Be sure that the yarn string is loose enough in the back that it won’t affect how your project will hang. And leave the color you were working with floating like before.

You’ll just continue doing this until you’re finished!

How to Add Tassels to a Crochet Tapestry

  1. Take about 4 strings of yarn of equal length.
  2. Insert your crochet hook into where you want the tassel.
  3. Hook the strings in the middle.
  4. Pull the strings through to where you have a loop (but not all the way through to where they come out)
  5. Then pull the ends through the loop to form a knot.

How to Wet Block a Tapestry

To wet block a tapestry, first run it under water until thoroughly wet.

Then, roll it up and squeeze to get excess water out. Do not wring it, just gently squeeze it so you don’t ruin the stitches.

Lay it out on your blocking board. Straighten the edges out to where you want them, pinning as you go.

Let it air dry, then unpin and you’re done!
